Slipping edge stitches in stockinette

Hi all! I have finally tackled the Tree of Life afghan (the reason I wanted to learn how to knit in the first place.)

I am having to sew the border when I get to that point and wanted a neat edge. Slipping the 1st stitch on the knit side with the yarn in back makes a nice chain…

How should I slip the 1st stitch on the purl side for a nice edge? Slipping it wyif looks like crap! (big loopy chain) I just started to purl that 1st stitch instead. Should I purl the last stitch of the knit row, then slip it on the other side wyib?

(or am I being silly and should just quit worrying about the edges. It’s not like I haven’t sewn on borders and been just fine before…) I just soooo want this one to turn out as close to perfect as I can get it.

Actually, if you’re going to sew on a border, many people find that slipping the edge sts makes it more difficult.

Really? Luckily I have only done 3 inches or so- I will STOP slipping stitches. I saw some post on a KAL that people were slipping them- that’s why I asked.

Off to knit!
