Slip stitch?

I have just finished working the right front band of this - http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/PATTchildHood.html

the pattern says to ‘slip stitch band into place’ along the front. How do I slip stitch?

Using tapestry needle and matching yarn, pick up sel st of body and sel st of band making sure to slightly stretch band. Often worked on wrong side.

What is sel st?

sel I think means selvage edge - so the edge of the body and the edge of the band
