I’ve noticed on a few patterns that they suggest you slip the first stitch and knit to the end, all the way through the pattern. Does this give some sort of finished edge or something?
Yes…it sort of appears to be a chain along the side of the scarf. Many knitters swear by slipping the first stitch to create a nice edge. I just finished “The Martha Scarf” and have attached a close-up of how the edge appears when the first stitch is slipped.

So then when you slip the first stitch, it will actually be knitted when you flip the work around… okay… cool. Thank you for showing me that… it does look nice.

OH! He LOVES his other sweaters! He picks up each paw to help me put them on him! He seemed to KNOW, however, that THIS sweater was in bad shape. It wasnt my knitting, which is PERFECT, of COURSE! :rollseyes: I just can’t sew for the LIFE of me!
Back to the topic at hand… 
Has anyone ever done this when working on a project in seed stitch? If so, does the slipped stitch count as the first knit stitch of the row? (assuming an odd # of stitches, so every row begins with a knit stitch)

I have never slipped the first stitch during seed stitch, but THIS pattern from the michael’s website specifically directs to do it that way for a neat edge. So I say go for it!
I also usually slip my edge knit stitches purlwise, and my edge purl stitches knitwise, but I’m not sure if that is orthodox or not (I figure it’s okay since I am consistant with it)

I am trying to figure out after I slip as if to purl on the vest edge where it is all knit where do I put the yarn to start knitting.
Do I take the yarn in front after I slip and put it in between the two needles??? I know how to make something that is easy very difficult.

the general rule of thumb is to have the yarn in front if the next stitch is a purl, and have the yarn in back if the next stitch is a knit. it doesn’t really matter what stitch you have just completed. placement of the working yarn is in preparation for the next stitch.
