I’m working on a skirt pattern for my older DD, and I’m trying to figure out this pattern. On the Fair Isle part of the pattern, there is a 2-color alternating vertical stripe. Like blue, yellow, blue, yellow. And on the rows they have like knit blue, slip yellow, knit blue, slip yellow. Then the next row is alternating slip blue, knit yellow, slip blue, knit yellow. KWIM? So what am I supposed to do there? I just can’t picture it in my mind. I’ve been teaching myself so far using knittinghelp.com and a couple of books, but this is something I just can’t work out in my mind. Any help is appreciated!
ETA: I know how to slip a stitch, but I’m not sure on this particular pattern how that would accomplish the color pattern, if that makes sense. Sorry, I’m still new to this.
Until you’ve experiemented with color slip stitch patterns, they don’t seems to make sense… but after a few rows–WOW. the are so much simpler to do than fair isle, (you only use 1 yarn/color per row)
slip stitch patterns make very interesting design.
a subset of slip stitch patterns are mosiac patterns, which create interesting tiled designs, (as apposed to all over simple pattern designs)
if you knit the entire row with blue, then you would have a big blue stripe running horizontally on your work, same with the yellow, you are just carrying the yellow up your work with slip stitches so that you can knit it on the next row, i just finished a rag today that had a similar pattern (it was called basketweave dishcloth or something) and it was very easy to understand when i was working it, i can see what you are talking about right now with the blue and yellow pattern and it seems very clear in my mind.
The people who wrote the pattern knew what they were doing.
