Slip as if to purl

When instructions say slip as if to purl, are you supposed to bring the yarn to the front and slip it that way, or just leave the yarn in back and slip with the yarn in the back? It does make a difference especially if the following stitch is a knit stitch. I’m not sure if I’m doing it right?? Any help appreciated!

Slip as if to purl is just to transfer the stitch without twising it. If they want you to put the yarn in someplace different than where it is already, they will specify ‘with yarn in back’ or ‘with yarn in front’.

Thanks so much! I am doing an i cord bind off on my booga bag and I tried it both ways. I do like the “correct” way much better! Hopefully once I felt it you won’t be able to tell I messed up!
