Slip ALL stitches? please help!

I am knitting some very cute MaryJane baby booties. I do not understand where it says to:
[B]Top[/B]
[B][U][SIZE=4]Slip all sts with yarn in front[/SIZE][/U][/B]
k24, sl 1 from left to right needle leave remaining sts unworked, turn.
[B]Row 1:[/B] P11, sl 1 from left to right needle, turn
[B]Row 2:[/B] K12, sl 1, turn

I may be brain dead right now…(been a long day) but how would I keep the yarn in the front? Does this mean exactly what it says, to slip the yarn to the right hand needle without making a stitch? And keep the yarn in the front while doing it??

I just dont get it.

You’re making short rows. Bring the yarn forward and slip the stitch from left needle to right w/o working it and turn your work. Then just do what it says. Short rows are a way to add extra rows or shaping in the middle of your work.

Me again…I just noticed where in the pattern it has instructions for the top of these booties before the actual ‘row 1’ [B][I](k24, sl 1 from left to right needle leave remaining sts unworked, turn.)[/I][/B]
Do I start with the actual[B] ‘row 1’[/B] or start doing what it says [B]above [/B]row 1?

[/B]Slip all sts with yarn in front
k24, sl 1 from left to right needle leave remaining sts unworked, turn.
[B]Row 1:[/B] P11, sl 1 from left to right needle, turn

And at the risk of stating the obvious: The “Slip all sts &c.” means “when slipping a stitch, do it with yarn in front”, rather than “do a “row” of slipped stitches”.

The purpose of the short rows, in this case, is to shape the toes. You can see in the picture that where the pink starts, the stitches are leaning to one side, even though they were vertical when you were doing the sole. The short rows form the curve in between.

Suzi…yes, you k24, then bring your yarn to the front and slip 1 stitch from the left needle to the right needle and just turn, putting the left needle in your right hand and vice versa. Then start row 1. You’ll be shaping the top of the bootie.

Do what it says before row 1. That puts you in position to do the shaping.

…tbh I have no idea why it’s written that way, since there are no repeats (eg “do rows 1-8 three times”), and since it appears to be symmetrical up to that point so there’s no reason why one end has to be the toe vs the heel, but :shrug:
