Slip 1st stich as if to purl?

I enjoy knitting scarves, they are quick and simple. I have been using the same simple pattern for these, however, I’m now using a new pattern, the directions for indicate Row 1 is to “Slip 1st stitch as if to purl. Knit into front and back of next stitch (increase 1).”

I’ve attempted to start this twice, but something is not right. Can anyone provide me with some hints since I’ve obviously doing somethig wrong!

Thanks,
~MF

You just transfer the first stitch from one needle to the other. Then make sure you bring the yarn to the back between the needles before you knit into the front and back of the next stitch. This will give you a nice chained edge.
