SL4 wyib looks funny, am I doin it wrong?

I am trying to finish a knitting project. If you Sl 4 wyib then K1 are you supposed to have a giant strand of yarn across the back? That might work on a sweater for an adult, but it will NOT work on a scarf for a 5 yr old! Or am I just doin it wrong? Thanks for any pointers!

Here’s the pattern I am following: http://www.knittingfool.com/pages/stCatalog2.guest.cfm?StitchID=300&name=Tricolor%20Wave%20Stripes&numofst=4&stplus=1&rows=12&rplus=0&sym=0

I changed it to sl 4 instead of 3 to make the wave a little broader…

Well, adding an extra stitch will make the strand longer. Try slipping just 3 sts as in the pattern.

Is it normal that the working yarn is just carried across the back like that? I’ve never slipped that many stiched before I guess…

Maybe there is an easier way to accomplish what I amtrying to accomplish… I could try another post for that question I guess…

Yes, that’s how it works. It depends on the gauge you’re doing it in. Smaller needles wouldn’t have as long a strand either.

Got it! That’s helpful Thanks!
