Sl 1...where's the yarn?

Hello all! I’m doing my first sock, s1, k1 for the heel flap. Is the working yarn in the front when I s1, then brought to back to k1?

I know to insert the right needle as if to purl for the s1, but what about the yarn? Videos here for turning the heel look like it’s done both ways … Thanks for the help!

I slip the first stitch as if to purl with the yarn in back. It’s faster that way, too.

thanks for the quick response! You rock! Now I can get some done during nap time (fingers crossed!)

Then I’m confused. First, I heard that you always slip as if to purl, unless indicated otherwise. Second, I thought when you slip as if to purl, you HAVE to have the yarn in the front. Otherwise, aren’t you slipping as if to knit ? Having said that, when I have a slip stitch before a purl st, I always have the yarn in front, and when I have a slip st before a knit sti, I always make sure the yarn is in the back when I slip st.

???

Am I doing something wrong?

Remember, it’s the first stitch on the edge of the sock heel section that is being slipped. It doesn’t really matter where the working yarn is because the stitch is being slipped. It’s more of a straight transfer of the first stitch from the left needle to the right needle without changing its alignment (I’m not sure that’s the word I mean) on the needle (that’s why it’s purlwise). Since the next stitch is a knit, the yarn can be in back - no biggie. Especially if you have just done a purl row, then turn, the yarn is already in the back. Just slip and go!

Does that make sense?

it does make sense in this instance Sunshine’s mom, since the row is sl 1 k1 repeated, then next row sl 1 and purl the rest of the row. BUT–boo raises another question. Is it only appropriate to have the yarn in back when the next stitch is a knit stitch? (say, for a different pattern?)

I think of slip purl-/knit-wise as ONLY being how you insert the right needle into the stitch on the left needle. Does it matter where that working yarn is if I were doing some crazy lace pattern or something? Does it really make a difference either way??? (Open the can of worms!)

Well, true, “open the can of worms” is right. It would totally depend on what your working on. I think we can safely say that however you do it that works for you is okay by me!

Thank heavens there aren’t knitting police!

A big hearty thanks for all of you! Now I’m wondering if I’m slipping the stitches on my socks right. Blimey!

I think if it’s important to the stitch pattern where the yarn is when slipping a stitch I have found that the pattern will specify as in slip as if to purl with yarn in front or s1wyif. If it doesn’t matter to the design I think it’s just a matter of what is more convenient.
