Size query

I have a lovely pattern for my grandson. It’s a top down sweater knitted in 220Superwash wave. My problem it the sizing given.

my grandsons are 4 and 6 which I assume are the ages above the chest size. But there is no way on the planet my boys have that chest measurement. Am I missing something obvious?

I remember when catalogs would admonish people to ‘order by size, not by age’ and that applies here I think. Go with measurements and ignore the age. You might have to adjust length of body and sleeves I expect but that shouldn’t be too hard unless it’s something like stranded colorwork. That’s what I think, others will almost certainly have better responses.

And of course we all want to know - What pattern are you using?

Chest measurement for the child or chest measurement for sweater? I hate when patterns are ambiguous. It seems to me that these measurements are for the sweater with 4-6" positive ease.
Here’s one representative of the many available charts.

As GG said, go by the measurements and decide how you would like the sweater to fit.

Ta muchly. GrumpyGramma. Sound advice. The pattern is drop dead gorgeous. Hmm can’t upload it. https://mobidrive.com/sharelink/p/7HcxKrTQAtzOvhKIapZn5z41jT97WWTFSxAomHawLjCF see if this works. It’s a free pattern.

Thank you. Its a fab pattern. I once knitted a proper gansey for my OH, it’s still going strong and no sewing together.

Going by the measurements I’d have to make the age 8 and my son is 12 years!
I agree about going by the child’s measurements and not the age, also about checking length and and sleeve length and increasing if needed.

Going by the link salmonmac gave my son is the weight and waist size of an 8 year old, and the height of a 12 year old.

If you knit for your grandchildren often you might get used to their individual sizes and growth spurt cycles.
My son goes back for the new school year in the previous years uniform but at October half term he has a growth sourt and is in the size up which I have ready and waiting. It’s handy to know for choosing knitting sizes.

I found it on Ravelry. It is cute! You might look at other free, top down raglans for comparison in sizing.

Oh my days, the wool (yarn) has just arrived. It is absolutely fabulous. Not cheap, but so soft, non itchy and washable. I’ll post a pic if I manage it. I have to finish OHs jumper first though.
