I am wanting to try a chunky scarf pattern and I’ll need circular needles to do it.
For a scarf, what length would I need to get?
Any suggesstions?
I see some in the 20’s and some in the 30’s.
Thanks.
Also, Ingrid, I finally tried cable knitting this weekend (small break in course work so took a weekend to myself) and you were so right, it is very simple.
Now I have very hopeful projects simmering in my head.
:woot:
To knit straight on circs, the longer, the better. However, if you want to use the circs for knitting in the round in the future, 24-32 is good for adult sweaters.
Okay, so down here in TX, I was planning to go to Hobby Lobby and they have them advertised as the longest in store being 39".
Is this long enough for a scarf or should I look to order online?
39" is more than long enough for a scarf, even if you’re going to knit it lengthwise. A circular needle can hold about 3 or 4 times it’s length. It would probably be better to get one that’s about 30-36", though. That way you could use it for sweaters.
Or you could get interchangeables, so you can have whatever length you need. I have a Boye Knitmaster that was 50% off at Hobby Lobby, and it’s awesome.
So with interchangables you would simply add on a longer needle if you needed more length? :poke:
Just a lil confused, haven’t used them myself yet.
Thanks
Interchangeable sets come with cables in different lengths. Some interchangeables can join cables and some can’t. Some that join make an awkward spot where the join is. Some can’t join cables, but offer cables in really long lengths.
I’m now knitting a scarf on 16" circulars. I’m knitting it straight, not in the round though. (I’ve only used the 16" because I’ve been working on small projects such as scarves, caps, and dishcloths). Might have to look for one of those Boye interchangeable sets for when I branch out into sweaters. . .
