Sirdar pattern help!

Hello  this is the first written pattern I’ve tried to follow, and I’ve been reading through it to understand before I start, but I have come across a part I don’t quite get! I am a beginner knitter, so that may be the issue. This pattern appears to be rather old, I bought it off etsy and it looks to be a photo of the original book/magazine. It’s a men’s V-neck cable knit cardigan, #9119, however searching that pattern number shows a completely different cardigan. Anyway, this is the part I’m struggling to understand, after working the back piece from the bottom up (151 sts)

“Shape shoulders - cast off 60, patt 30, cast off 60, slip centre 31 sts onto thread.”

So what I don’t get is after the first cast off 60, it says patt 30 (I imagine this means carry on with the initial pattern), and then cast off another 60, but that only equals 150 sts, where does the last st come in? Shouldn’t it be cast off 60, patt 31, cast off 60?

Sorry this was so long-winded, and thanks in advance to anyone who helps!!

Good question. When you cast off the first 60sts there will be one stitch left on the right hand needle. When you work in pattern across the next 30, that makes the 31sts on the right hand needle.

Maybe this one?

That single stitch is important so it is a very good question to ask.
Some patterns might say to work in pattern for 31 stitches and it seems (when it’s on the needles) that there aren’t enough stitches left to do this.
Also that single stitch should be worked in pattern. For instance if you are doing a straight forward knit bind off but the pattern is purls (to set off the cable patterns) then this stitch number 31 needs to be purled. The 30th stitch can still be passed over it to bind off. Otherwise there will be a single knitnstitch sitting amongst the purls - not a massive deal for a beginner knitter really but nicer if you know ahead of time to look at what this stitch should be.

Hope you’ll share some work in progress photos when you get going and do post questions on any bits you don’t understand. This forum if very supportive and there is always help here.

Yep that’s my guy!
Ah thank you so much for that clarification  Yeah I’m sure I’ll be making some other mistakes but it’s definitely nice to be aware of things like this beforehand.
Also I have no knitters around me so I’m very happy that a place like this exists! I can already tell that it’s very supportive and a ‘no silly questions’ kind of place. I will definitely be posting an update, and likely asking more questions hehe.
Thanks again!

Every knitter here learned to knit. I learned to knit right here. I could knit and purl but everything else was a deep, dark secret until I got the help I needed. Every mistake made, identified, corrected makes you a more experienced knitter. That’s a lovely pattern. You’ll have every right to feel proud of your accomplishment!

I made an error in my description. I should have said the 61st stitch is an important stitch and can be worked in pattern and the 60th stitch can still be passed over to bind off in that first section of 60 bind offs.
I think you understood what I meant but I also thought I better correct it in case I caused additional confusion.

Same for me and many others here. I had first learned to knit as a youngster but had not knitted in 30 years or more. I started knitting again about 2 years ago and found this forum - amazing help, very respectful and friendly which is just what we want from a forum.

Well all be very glad to help you out through your project. It’s a big project to take on but you will learn so many things making this. Just take it one step at a time.

No worries, I understood what you meant  I appreciate that though.
Haha yeah I tend to throw myself in the deep end with things like this  I am making it for my friend so I warned him not to expect anything for at least a month minimum (I’m a part-time student so I have plenty of time on my hands). I’ve been reassuring myself that it’s mostly k’s and p’s, and spent a while practicing cables, so if I just take it slow hopefully it will be wearable!
At the very least, after this I will have gained some muscle memory and bettered my technique
Thanks again for your kind words!
