You’ve persisted and really accomplished more than a lovely baby dress. Please do post a photo when you finish!
Will do. Thanks.
Sorry, have another question
. I’ve nearly finished the back, but I’m thinking the neckline is probably going to be somewhat snug to fit over baby’s head- 78 stitches in all. It looks quite snug on the pattern photo. So my plan is to have a narrow placket with button holes along the shoulder. I’d like to knit this in continuity, rather than having to pick up stitches on the shoulder, but I’m not sure about the shoulder shaping. The pattern says to cast of 7 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows and another further 8 at the beginning of the subsequent next 2 rows, leaving 29 stitches for the neck. Instead of casting off can I knit the placket, or would it be better to finish as the pattern says and then pick up stitches to knit the placket. Hope that makes sense. Many thanks.
I often think that the worst possible thing is to annoy the baby or child. Good of you to think of this.
Are you planning on a placket on one of the shoulders? You could go either way. A knit in buttonband on the front and a buttonhole band on the back at the shoulder will work. You would ignore the shoulder bind off and knit the shoulders straight up then work the bands. It seems like a big change to avoid the slope at the shoulder but this is a child’s dress and it’s really not needed.
It may be slightly firmer to finish the shoulder again straight up then pick up sts for the buttonband and buttonhole band.
This is a nice bind off to avoid the jog at the shoulders if you decide to go ahead with the shoulder shaping. This bind off makes it easier to pick up sts.
No limit on questions here so don’t hesitate to come back and ask. There are several ways to work these shoulders so there are a couple of decisions to make.
Thank you so much for the advice. I’ll go for the button band and knit straight up. I did think about doing it on just one shoulder, but I’ve got some really cute little teddy bear buttons, so think I’ll do a button band both sides for a bit more room and perhaps a bit more longevity of wear as baby grows. Thanks for the video link, will save it for future use. Many thanks again x
Sounds good and I love the idea of the teddy bear buttons. Perfect!
