Hi I,m knitting my first bottom up yoked sweater. Sirdar 10154 After knitting the bottom of the sweater all 15inches I realised I had forgotten to do the decreases on the last round of ribbing . I,m blaming a very naughty 6month old pup … she is very distracting at the moment. Anyway before ripping out I decided to reread the pattern and check all the numbers.
After casting on for size 3 340 sts the dec row states k2 k2tog ….. k4k2tog 12 times k5k2tog 27times k4k2tog12times ….k3 pattern states 288st remain . I get it to 285 sts . ?
Also after completing the body the for 15inches the pattern states next k78 slip last 12 sts on holder k144 slip last 12sts on holder k66 leave remaining 132 for front and back on thread that’s a total of 420 sts which is more than the original cast on number . ?
When joining body and sleeves the pattern says starting at the centre back marker knit across …. However the pattern only ever asks for beg of round markers so I,m not sure where the centre back would be . I,ve knit top down lots of times but this is my first bottom up . Thank you for your help
Oh those puppies, so distracting and so cute.
If I’m understanding the pattern dec row it works out to:
k2tog x1=-1
k2togx12=-12
k2togx27=-27
k2togx12=-12
Those decreases add up to 52.
340-52=288
For the next section, are the 66sts for the sleeves a cast on by any chance rather than part of the body sts? In that case the sts add up to 132+132+12+12=288 which is what you have been knitting for the body. The 12sts on each side would be the underarm with 66 newly cast on sts at the underarm make the sleeve. Can you quote just this section of the pattern exactly. Don’t give us more than these few lines due to designer copyright.
The back (and the front) are each 132sts. Count 66sts and place a marker for the center back. This may now be a new beginning of round marker but see what your pattern says next.
Yes, as @salmonmac says, for this type of sweater you need to cast on more stitches on each side, to go out around the upper arm and form the bottom of the yoke.
If it’s a lot to type out, you can take a photo of that part of your pattern and post it using the landscape option, next to the emoji button above where you would type. You can crop the photo, or cover extra parts of the pattern with paper. Be sure to wait for the photo to upload, which can take longer than you might think.
Hi thank you for your help . I have attached the section of pattern … this row comes straight after you have reached the correct body length. You then knit the sleeves before jpining everything together for the yoke
Somehow the photo didn’t attach.
Use the landscape icon at the top of the Reply box then follow the directions to upload a photo.
Hi sorry about that puppy again . Regarding the dec row for rib i agree it is 288 however it then says knit 3sts which would make 291.
I,ve attached the pattern for the next round after you have knit the bottom to desired length. This is the section that confuses me as the stitch count adds up to more stitches than I have . It doesn’t include any sleeve stitches just bottom of body .
You then knit the sleeves before attaching everything together for the yoke . Thank you
I think you have added up all the stitches mentioned as though they are all different stitches. They’re not. Some of the stitches are referred to twice.
Work 78, pause, put 12 of these on hold (take off the needle and put onto scrap yarn) you now have 66 worked and 12 on hold.
Then work 144, pause, put 12 of these on hold, you have 132 worked and 12 on hold.
Then work 66. These 66 take you back to the beginning of the round and add together with the first 66 to make a total on this piece 132.
The 132 refered to in the next instruction are not a different 132. These are the sts worked earlier.
The stitch count between the initial cast on and main body is 288, as salmonmac said, the k3 was already taken into account and the decreases in that transition round work out accurately for the cast on, decreases, and front/back/sleeves instruction.
I hope this helps a bit.
Have you knit the sleeves already? There should be 66sts on hold for each of the sleeves. They will be attached in this section of the instructions although it seems to me that the pattern leaves out these instructions.
Start by knitting the 66sleeves sts off of the sleeve holder. Now knit 12sts from the body. Place those 12sts on hold.
Knit the next 144sts from the body placing the last 12 of those sts on hold.
Pick up the second sleeve and knit the 66 sleeve sts.
Continue on by placing the next 132 body sts on hold.
That accounts for the 288 body sts. The 66sts x 2 are the sleeves which are in addition to the original body sts.
Those extra sts over the amount that you worked from the body are due to the addition of the sleeve sts. That’s what is giving you the 420sts. (132+132+12+12=288sts
288+66+66=420sts)
I’ll just note that it will be a HUGE help to you if you go through the pattern and mark which size you’re working. Circle with a pencil, use a highlighter, whatever. As you proceed, the instructions will get more complex and you’ll be able to see immediately which numbers to follow.
Many thanks . I will rip back to the rib complete the decreases and follow all your advice from there. Thank you again .
