Single Stitch Garter Column

My pattern says to k1, p1 to single-st garter column. What does this mean? Thank you for your help!

Welcome to KH! What is the name and who is the designer of your pattern? Is that exactly how it’s written? If the idea is to have one column worked in garter stitch and you’re working flat you’ll knit or purl that single stitch on both sides of the work.

Surely, if that one stitch is meant to be in garter, you’d knit it on either side, regardless of the ribbing pattern?

Is this an increase? Knit an purl into a single stitch?
It would help to know exactly how it’s written in the pattern.

Thank you all for your help!!! The name of the pattern is Mayhem (a textured crescent shawl) by Asa Tricosa. I am at the end of the pattern- working on the border. The row says the following:

Sl1wyf, p1, (k1, p1) to single-st garter column, M1Rp) fourteen times, p1, (k1, p1) to 5-st garter column, k2, M1Lp, k1, M1Rp, k2) eight times, p1, (k to garter column, M1Lp, k1, M1Rp), fourteen times, (p1, k1) to end

The rest of the pattern I understand. Just stump on this row. I just learned about this forum and am very excited to have some help since I am a advanced beginner!!! Thank you again!

Ah, the brackets make a difference.
It possibly means k1, p1 all the way up to the place where you have a garter stitch column. I can’t be sure though as there’s a bracket missing, can you check your text and edit to put the other bracket in?

Is this your shawl

Yes

I checked. That is how it is written. It may be a typo error on their part. I am very confused as to what to do. Hoping to finish this shawl this weekend  Any help is greatly appreciated!

How far have you worked in this shawl? Is this the beginning or have you established a pattern already over several rows?
What is your stitch count before this row?
Is there a stitch count after the row is completed?

It’s worth messaging Asa Tricosa to ask about this row. She has a Ravelry page.

You found it! The photos on Ravelry are almost always more helpful than a pattern listing. Looking at photos on projects I think the single column of garter stitch is separating the square-ish shapes.

eta It’s a lot like a faux seam which I often use for top down seamless sweaters. Just knit the stitch on both sides of the work and you can soon see the line appear. The increases will be on one or both sides of the ‘faux seam’ column.

eta2 using markers until it’s all established and easy to see where the garter columns are can be very helpful. After you can see where the line is you can probably dispense with the markers. That’s based on my experience; I don’t excel on accurate counting.

Thank you!! I just posted my question on her forum on Ravelry! Great idea! I didn’t know she had a page. Thank you for the advise!

We’ll be watching the forum page but please let us know here how it turns out. We’d love to see a photo of the finished shawl, too. It’s going to be lovely.

Asa Tricosa and other knitters seem very responsive in the Mayhem thread in the Asa Tricosa group on Ravelry which might also be a good place to post.

I hope you get a quick reply on the ravelry forum.
Meanwhile, maybe this could help (maybe not), see if it makes sense.

The photo is a great help and I’ve marked it up

You said you are beginning the border, so I believe this is a broken rib pattern (it starts k1 p1 repeated but later rows are broken and I can’t say for sure the stitch pattern but you’ll have that in your pattern, I think you just need help on how to get started). I have marked part of the broken rib with a green square.

My understanding is that you have 14 sections which are seperated with a single garter column (marked with red arrows) then you have 8 sections where the 5 stitch garter repeats, (this is the column I marked in blue) 8 of these. Then you have another 14 sections seperated by the single garter column (red arrows).

The instruction is to k1 p1 and repeat this rib pattern until you reach the first garter column
Then M1Rp (this will be in the abbreviations key, probably make one right purlwise) this will be lifting the strand just before the garter stitch column.
Then repeat all this 13 more times so 14 repeats are done in total. That is, k1 p1 repeated until you reach the next garter column (red arrow) M1Rp, then repeat again. The garter column will be knit as it always comes at the start of the repeat which is k1.
When these are done the next part is to work up to the 5 stitch garter section : p1 then repeat k1 p1 until you reach it
Then k2, M1Lp, k1, M1Rp, k2 which will take up the 5 stitches
That’s one repeat done
Work this 7 more times, that is k1 p1 up to the next 5 garter stitch section, work the 5 stitch section with k2, M1Lp, k1, M1Rp, k2.
Then there should be another 14 sections which have the single garter column again, these are worked differently to the first 14
p1, (k to garter column, M1Lp, k1, M1Rp), fourteen times
To me it doesn’t make sense that it is different, that you are to plain knit until the garter stitch column but that’s what it says so either it will make sense to you as you look at your fabric or its a typo in your message or a typo in the pattern. It would make sense to k1 p1 to the next garter column Then M1Lp.
After 14 repeats in total of these the last part is to p1 k1 repeated to the end of the row.

With any luck this will either all click into place now you see the pattern photo and marked sections or you will get a reply from the designer with some errata or help.

Thank you so much!! This finally makes sense!! Your markings were SO helpful!!! I will let you know how it goes

Good to hear it makes some sense.
Watch out for that kast section though where the pattern seems to have an error.
