single cable versus 'cross'

Hello!
I want to knit the Carol Feller Trellis top (lots of single cables - i.e. crossing 2 stitches). I wanted to use this pattern to try out a new knitting machine(!) - I thought I’d learn a new skill but want to make something good and this seemed perfect as there is next to no shaping,
The question is, will a right / left cross, as worked in this pattern (1/1LC = knit second stitch tbl, then knit 1st and 2nd stitch through back loop and 1/1RC = k2tog leaving on L needle, then k 1st stitch again) look the same as a simple 1/1 cable which I can work by transferring stitches manually on the machine? I have used the ‘cross’ method before but I’m not sure if it adds extra twist to the stitches, and therefore, extra definition to the cable pattern? thank you!

I know nothing about machine knitting so just a drive by link to what I think is your pattern.

A cable cross doesn’t usually twist but the cable cross in your pattern has knit sts through the back loop which will twist the sts. That makes them stand out a bit more. Can you do that manually on the machine?
Thanks for the link, GG.

Curious… Those directions for the LC would twist stitches (more a la Bavarian style) but the directions for the RC don’t. If those are supposed to be mirroring each other, I don’t understand the logic of working them that way, as they’d look quite different–twisting the stitch underneath isn’t as noticeable, but twisting the top one definitely has a whole different look. But there could be reasons for doing it that way that make sense in context…?

I don’t think there’d be a good reason why one twists and the other doesn’t. The pattern is a symmetrical trellis. I think the aim of the technique was to avoid a cable needle but I can work 1x1 cables without any twist or a cable needle quite easily. I was planning to just do a straight switch of the stitches on the machine but I can add a twist too. I’ll have to try on cheap yarn before using the best stuff!!

Sure, a lot of people will even do 2/2 or 3/3 crosses without a cable needle (actually I do too but I didn’t want it to sound like bragging). Personally I also like to do 1/1 twists by just rearranging the stitches before working them, like any small cable. From what I’ve seen and read, some version of that often tends to give the smoothest looking results as well, though obviously others feel differently…

Good luck with your project!
