Silk Yarn

This is another Whoa, yarn is expensive! thread. :thud:

I’d like to make a hat for my dad to wear while he jogs, hikes, whatever that isn’t heavy and isn’t scratchy. Silk is a great insulator, but everything online is so expensive, or girly! Some yarn isn’t that expensive, but it’s fingering weight or lighter. My dad is not a girly man, or I’d make him one out of the recycled sari silk. Does anybody have any recommendations for relatively cheap silk/silk blends? It doesn’t have to be fancy, the rawer the silk, the better it insulates. Thanks!

I’m not sure if they have anything for you, but sells bulk yarns at a discount. You may be able to find what you’re looking for there. You do have to buy in bulk though, so it’s nice to have a friend to possibly split it with!

I had surgery recently and I loved my surgeon. I told him I wanted to knit something for him and he asked for a hat he could sleep in since he was bald. He wanted it to be really soft so I used Lorna’s Laces Lion and Lamb - it is a wool and solk blend and it comes in tons of great colors. I know it is not inexpensive but you could make a couple of hats from one skein and it really is one of the nicest yarns I have ever seen or worked with. He loved the hat and when I went back for my followup visit he said he has not taken it off his head.

I found some! This is exactly what I was looking for. I also saw the Lorna’s Laces yarn, but for what my dad will do to it, I think I’ll stick with this. Thanks!
