I am new to this group, but have been knitting for over 50 years. I can’t make sense of my pattern for a sleeveless top but I suspect it might be short rows.
I have 65 st on my needle (in stockinette).
For the back, I will cast off 19 of the middle stitches and then work each side separately and cast off 3 st at neck edge after 2 more rows.
That will leave me with 40 st (20 for each side and then I will knit a few more rows (until armholes are correct length)
Here’s where I am completely stumped:
cast off at each end as foll:
9 st twice / 10 st twice / 10 st once + 11 st once + 12 st once
When I get to the front I will have to shape the shoulders as for the back.
But, for the front neck, I will cast of 13 in the middle, work each side separately and cast off at neck edge every other row as foll: 3 st once, 2 st once, and 1 st once.
That part seems to make sense as regular stepped bind offs. And it will leave me with the same 40 st (20 per side) as I had for the back.
If anyone can translate this I would greatly appreciate it. I have done a little bit with short rows and can follow a video, so I can get the wrap and turn part if that is what you think is intended by these directions. I just can’t understand how to cast off all those stitches when I only start with 20 on each side.
By the way, this pattern was promoted as EASY.
Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern?
It may be that the pattern comes in different sizes and the directions:
“9 st twice / 10 st twice / 10 st once + 11 st once + 12 st once”
are for those sizes. Perhaps yours is the “10sts twice”?
THAT’S IT!!
My pattern is Pure Pleasure by Wool Addicts
Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. It’s perfectly obvious now that you told me.
I guess I should knit earlier in the day.
I had been tackling it after my brain was already drained. And I made it into this huge big problem, researching short rows, etc.
BUT, the best thing to come out of it is finding this forum.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

Woo, nice looking top!
Glad to be able to help and enjoy finishing up.
The yarn is heavenly soft. Sort of like a boucle so it requires paying attention to not split it. I have shortened the back by one inch and added that inch to the front because it is for a friend who will want the extra coverage in the front. I may also seam the armholes a bit smaller. My thought is that it would make a great beach cover up too. Although the directions do not say short rows, my LYS owner recommends that I do that.
so here’s a question for you…
Can I do short rows on the neckline since it is not at the end of a row but in the middle of the garment? (or should I?)
You do have to be careful with boucle but it can produce a lovely fabric.
By all means work some short rows on the back neck. It lifts the back and makes a much nicer fit. The top doesn’t pull to the back and ride up at the front neck. You’ll have to experiment with how to do this but it’s often 2 or 3 pairs of short rows (4-6 rows) over the middle 2/3 or 3/4 of the back. Make each set extend a few sts longer than the previous set. If you have a pattern with short rows over the back, you might see what they suggest.
