Should I trust the pattern?

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]I am confused. I saw this beautiful neck warmer at my LYS and I the pattern was free with purchase of yarn. The pattern is called “Cabled Neck Warmer” but it appears to be a faux cable. (Or that is what the LYS person told me when I asked where to insert the cable needle.)[/SIZE][/FONT]

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]After the initial 7 rows of knitting and creating buttonholes, it reads:[/SIZE][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3][B]Set up row for cable: (WS) K3, pm, p2, k3, P9, K2, P2, pm, K3.[/B][/SIZE][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3][B]Cable Row 1: K3, sm, K2, P3, yo, K4, ssk, K3, P3, K2, sm, K3.[/B][/SIZE][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3][B]Row 2 and all even rows: K3, sm, P2, K3, P9, K3, P2, sm, K3.[/B][/SIZE][/FONT]

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]If I am understanding the pattern correctly, ‘pm’ is place marker and ‘sm’ is slip marker. [/SIZE][/FONT][FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]But, if I do that, I have slipped the markers from the needle in Cable Row 1 and don’t have any to slip for Row 2. [/SIZE][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial][/FONT][FONT=Arial][SIZE=3]Am I making any sense? Am I reading the pattern wrong? Or is the pattern wrong?[/SIZE][/FONT]

You don’t take the markers completely off your knitting when you slip them, just slip them from needle to needle. So they’re still there when you get to the next row.

And in case you wondered about the ‘faux cables’ that look is achieved by the way the decs are placed.

I have one MORE question in the same pattern.
It reads:
Work until piece measures 21 1/4" ending after a WS row.
How do I know what is a WS row?

Since the setup row for the cable is noted as the WS, then row 1 and the odd numbered rows are the RS. You might want to mark the middle of that row with a safety pin or different colored yarn so you’ll know which it is later.
