Shaping shoulders

I’m kinda confused on how to proceed with the shaping of the shoulders. I have 72 sts to begin with and did everything all the way to binding off center 28 sts per instructions. From there is where I am stuck. I think I still k to end with ball 2 yarn and then???

Shape Shoulders and Neck: Next Row (RS): Bind off 5(6-8-9-11-12), k to first marker, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 28 sts, k to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 5(6-8-9-11-12) sts at beg of the next row, then 4(6-7-9-10-12) sts at beg of the next 4 rows. AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 5 sts at each neck edge once, then 4 sts once.

Right, after you BO stitches, knit to the end of the row with the 2nd ball of yarn. Turn and BO sts at the beg of the WS row, work to the bound off stitches, drop the yarn and pick up the other yarn, BO 5 sts for the neck edge and finish the row. Turn and BO at the beg of the row, work to the gap, switch yarns BO 5 neck sts and finish the row. Repeat, only now you’re going to BO 4 st at the neck edge instead of 5. After you’ve got the first row or two done it’ll be easier to see what happens in your knitting than it is in your head.

When you come to instructions like this, it may help to make a drawing of the sts to bind off at the armhole edges and the sts to bind off at the neck edge. You can cross them out as you do them. It makes it easier to keep track of the decreases and remember to do them all at the right time.

Is there a reason to do both bind offs at the same time instead of doing it one at a time.

You can do each shoulder separately if you’d rather. If there were to be several rows knit on them, doing them at the same time would make sure you get the same number of rows on each shoulder. But with this one, there’s only about 4 rows, so you wouldn’t have a problem with that.

I’m looking at one shoulder at a time. I would have started with 22 sts each. I bind off 5 sts once at neck edge for one row and once at armhole edge for the next row so far.

I’m still confused on how to proceed on next 4 rows.

For one at a time, you BO 5 on the RS at the armhole edge, work to where the center sts would be bound off, then turn and BO 5 at the neck edge and finish the WS row. Turn and BO 4 at the beg of the row to the neck, turn and BO 4 at the neck edge and finish the row. Turn and BO 4 on the RS, finish turn and work the WS row, then turn and BO the final 4 sts.
