Shaping shoulder

I have shaped the armholes and now I sm suppose to shape right shoulder:
Keeping stitch pattern correct, pattern 20sts and turn. Work each side of neck separately.
(WS) Cast off 4 sts at beg of row, 6sts at beg of foll row, and 3sts at beg of next row. Cast off rem sts.

Shape left shoulder: with RS facing, rejoin yarn and cast off centre 21sts. Cont in pattern to end of row. WQork 1 row without shaping
Work left shoulder to match, reversing shapings.

Am I suppose to pattern to 20sts and turn to wrong side. Cast off 4sts at the beg of the 20sts? Knit to the end, turn co 6sts work to the end, turn co 3sts work to the end? So I am just working those 20sts not the rest? When it says co rem sts should I do that? I remember Ingrid telling someone it is better to leave sts on the needle to do a 3 needle bind off. Or am I mixing things up. I also watched Amys video on sloped bind off. Is this where I am suppose to do this? And where do I start because Amy said something about starting the row below. I am a little confused. :??

Yes.

Since this is a sloped bind-off just do it as written. Amy’s technique adds a little finesse, but since this is your first experience, just go with the pattern.

The 3 needle bind off on sloped shoulders requires short row shaping. Since you’re also shaping the neck at the same time as the shoulders, it might get too confusing to do it that way.

If you want, you can only do the neck decreases and ignore the shoulder ones. Then you can do the 3 needle bo. The sloping doesn’t really make all that much difference since you’re only doing one 6 stitch bind off at the shoulder edge.

Thanks, I thought of one more question. Since my pattern has purl and knits all across and it says BO 6 sts at the beg. My stitches are all different. I know when you are doing a regular BO you are suppose to Knit if it is a knit and purl if it is a purl like for example ribbing. Since this is an argyle is it any different? Should I just knit or purl as they come?

You can do either. I like the look of knitting it in pattern when doing the BOs; that’s k on the k stitches, p on the p stitches.

shoulder shaping
I finished the one side of the shoulder but the other side is different.
its says,
shape right shoulder: keeping stitch pattern correct, pattern 20sts and tur, work each side of neck separately. (ws) cast off 4sts at beg of row, 6sts at beg of foll row, and 3sts at beg of next row. cast off rem sts. I did that.
SHape left shoulder: with RS facing, rejoin yarn and cast off centre 21sts. cont in pattern to end of row. I did all this but now it say.
Work 1 row without shaping. work left shoulder to match reversing shapings. After I rejoined the yarn and cast off 21sts and patterened to the end of the row. But why am I suppose to work one row without shaping when I did not have to do that on the right shoulder. Right after I patterned the 20sts it said to cast off 4sts at beg of row. So why am I doing one row without shaping for the left? Isn’t the left going to be one row higher than the right?

It has to do with the fact that you can’t bind off at the end of a row. Because this pattern is wanting you to do the 4st neck bind off first, you have to work one row without shaping to get to the proper place where you can do that, and for the left side this has to be done at the beginning of a rs row. Following that, you do the 6st BO at the beginning of the next (ws) row and then 3st BO at the beginning of the next (rs) row, then you’re done.

It may be that one side is a row higher than the other, and this kind of has to be, due to the fact that you can’t BO at the end of a row, you have to throw an extra row in there. But over the course of a whole project it will be un-noticeable. I’m sure you have the same row difference at the armhole level too, but you won’t even notice it once it’s all seamed together.

Thanks, I was not sure so I thought I better check.
