Hello, and thankyou for allowing me to join this group.
I am currently knitting a cardigan. When it comes to shaping the shoulder, do you start casting off from armhole edge 1st or neck edge?
TIA

Shaping shoulder of Left front Cardigan
Hello
Shaping a shoulder could involve the arm edge and the neck edge, either, or both.
What pattern name/number are you making?
If you can type out a row or two of the part you are unsure of someone will be able to help.

Shape shoulder…cast off 8 sts at beg of next and follow alt row. Work 1 row, cast off rem sts.
OK, is this pattern it’s just whatever the next row is.
If you call next row, row 1 then
Row 1 cast off 8 sts, work to end of row
Row 2 work row
Row 3 cast off 8 sts, work to end of row
Row 4 work row
Row 5 cast off all
Hope this helps
Irrelevant but … I live near Bendigo!
I’m just wondering, do I start the casting off on the neck side or the armhole side?
Have a look at the schematic – see how the shoulder of the garment slopes upwards from the armscye to the neckline to match the way our own shoulders slope up from the top of the arm to the neck?
So you need to start the shoulder shaping at the bottom of the slope, i.e. at the armscye.
If you started to make the shoulder slope from the neckline, it would slope in the wrong direction.
Your shoulder slope for the left shoulder (left when worn) will look something like this from the right side:
The lowest step is on the armscye side.
(This image doesn’t show the neck shaping, but you can see that on your schematic.)
Holding your knitting up to your body will help.
You can also do a sloped bind-off, which IMHO makes for a smoother seam.
Thanks. I will always remember that now…low side at armhole side.
