Shaping question

I am knitting Grace from Knitty and have a question on the upper left piece. Pattern is:

With smaller needle, CO 42[44, 48, 52] sts. Beg with a WS row, work 3 rows in garter st. Change to larger needle and work in St st.

S[M] Sizes Only: Dec 1 st at the left-hand edge of the piece [left edge when RS is facing] every 3rd row 14 times. (28[30] sts). Work 2 rows even.

My questions are:

1.After In work the last row of garter stitch, do I knit the next row and start with dec in the next step?

  1. When I do the dec row do I count that as the first row of the 3 rows? Or do I knit the dec row, then start counting to 3?

  2. How many rows will this end up before working the 2 rows even?

Candice

I would say that you work the garter stitch rows, then switch to st st and start your decrease on the third row of the st st.

So if you consider your first row of st st as row 1, you would decrease on rows 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42. Then work 2 rows even.

If I knit my 3 rows of garter, then:

Row 1 K
Row 2 P
Row 3 K and dec

Row 4 P
Row 5 K
Row 6 P and dec

I thought I could only decrease on K rows since the pattern says Dec 1 st at the left-hand edge of the piece [left edge when RS is facing] every 3rd row 14 times.

I guess I am still confused.

I completed this pattern not too long ago, and if I remember correctly you do the decreases on both knit and purl rows – always on the same edge. So, the LEFT edge when the RS is facing and the RIGHT edge when the WS is facing.

Thanks to both of you!

Amber - how did yours turn out? Do you have a photo? I wanna see!
