Shaping armholes and raglan decreases

Hi everyone! I have knit quite a few afghans before but I have never knit a sweater so this is my first attempt. I am shaping the back and do not understand the instructions. I have 124 stitches on my needle.
They are as follows: “When the piece measures 42 cm, on every other row bind off 1x6 sts and 3x2 sts at both ends for the armholes = 104 sts.”

Then I am instructed to begin the raglan decrease as follows: “On every other row decrease 25x1 sts at both ends. On a RS row p1, p2tog, work to last 3 sts, p2tog through back loop, p1. On every other row decrease 3x2 sts at both ends: on a RS row p1, p3tog, work to last 4 sts, p3tog through back loop, p1.”

I understand how to do the stitches mentioned. What confuses me is the 1x6 sts and 3x2 sts, and then the 25x1 sts. I have never heard this terminology. Any help would be appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on making that first sweater!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
One times 6sts at both ends means to bind off 6sts at the beginning of the row, work to the end of the row, turn and bind off 6sts at the beginning of this row then work to the end of the row.
Three times 2sts at both ends means to bind off 2sts work to the end of row, turn, bind off 2sts then work to the end of row. Repeat these 2 rows twice more.

Decrease on every other row 1 stitch 25 times at both ends means to work a decrease (maybe ssk) at the beginning of the row and another decrease (k2tog for example) at the end of row. Work one row without decreases and then repeat these 2 rows 24 times more.

Sometimes it’s nice to work the decreases one or even 2 stitches in from the ends to make seaming easier.

Can you check the stitch count or if maybe you made a typo in your post?
Binding off 6sts each end = 12
Binding off 2 sts each end × 3 = 12
Total = 24
However if you start with 124 you can’t end with 104 after these bind offs.

I would check the pattern, how many sts should you have before the bind offs? Check the decreases is it definitely 2 sts each end 3 times? Check you looked at the right number for size in the pattern at each instruction.
If the stitch count is out it’s better to discover it now and find it or consider a fix, otherwise things won’t add up later and cause additoonal confusion.

Thank you so much for your quick response. Your instructions were very clear and helpful, and yes, as you mentioned I did read the pattern wrong. It is 2x2 and not 2x3. I tried counting the stitches after reading your instructions and realized my mistake. I also appreciate the advise about doing the decreases one or two stitches in. I’m sure that will be very helpful.

I am knitting the Sofi sweater by Novita – something I found on line. I’m sure I will be back for more help. I am so happy I found this forum. I can’t wait to share pictures of the finished product with you all!

Beautiful pattern!

Ooh that’s a nice design.
Glad the stitch count was resolved so easily. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

I’m not sure what year you asked this question for this pattern, but I am so thankful you did. This Sofi sweater back has been in my procrastination drawer for 2 years while I tried to figure out these very same instructions. I just happened to come across this conversation by Googling Sofi Sweater help and hurray I found your request. I immediately joined knitting help. Maybe I can now finish this sweater…LOL

Welcome.
This is a lovely looking sweater, don’t hesitate to ask if you are still stuck or get stuck again, there’s lots of help here.

Ok, I think for now I have gotten myself untangled from too much over-thinking. I am ready to start knitting and I like the idea of doing stockinette or reverse stockinette before decreases to keep seaming easy. Onward…
