Shaping a neckline

I’m knitting a sweater and don’t particularly like the neckline and want to change it. Are there some general guidelines for shaping a boat neck or crew neck? What I’m looking for is a loose formula that indicates in general how many stitches to cast off for the basic opening of a neckline and also what the “recipe” for decreases might be to shape the sides.

Any information would be appreciated. If there is a reference in one of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s books that addresses this issue I’d love to know that, too.

It sounds like EZ’s percentage system is what you need. If you don’t have her book, I’ll take a look when I get home.

This might be even more help!
