I purchased a beautiful pattern from Precious Newborn Knits #46. Having trouble with understanding pattern. After working 4 rows in stocking stitch (k,p,k,p - 49 sts on needle) the pattern calls for:
Shape Raglan: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows (45 sts)
Next: k1, sl1, k1, psso knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Next: purl across
Repeat the last 2 rows until 25 sts remain ending with right side facing for next row.
when i cast off 2 sts I have more than 45 stitches on needle.
when I knit/purl the next 2 rows I always end up with less than 25 sts. I have redone this piece over and over again. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Hello, boxerluv.
When you start your Raglan shaping you are beginning with a knit row. So you will cast off 2 sts and knit across the rest of the row (47 st), then starting a new row cast off 2 sts and purl across the rest of the row (45 sts).
Then on the next row you k1, sl1, k1, psso. After you have worked these 3 sts (which will leave you with 2 sts on your right needle) you then knit across the row to the last 3 sts before doing the k2tog, k1, so you’re only doing decreases at the start and finish of each knit row, the rest of each knit row is just knitted.
You will start off by cast off 2 sts and then knit the rest.
Then cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the NEXT row and purl the rest.
(the instructions say to cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. That will get you to 45 sts)
- THEN you will k1, sl1, k1, psso; knit across and K2tog and k1.
- The next row will be purl across.
You will knit rows 1. and 2. until you have 25 sts left.

I just followed your detailed instructions and it came out perfect! I just might get this sweater knitted after all. Thank you so much Dclutterchique and knitcindy for the super fast response and clear details. This is an awesome forum.
