Shape Neck and Shoulders

Okay, I’m back, and I’m confused again. Here are the directions for the sweater neck/shoulder shaping:

Right side: *BO 8 sts, work 28 sts, turn. Place rem sts on a holder. Dec 1 st from the neck edge every row 4 times; at the same time, BO 8 sts from shoulder edge 3 times. Break off yarn.

Is my interpretation here correct:

Row 1: *BO 8 sts. Work 28 sts, turn.
Row 2: Place remaining sts on a holder. Dec 1 st from the neck edge. BO 8 sts from shoulder edge.
Row 3: Dec 1 st from the neck edge. BO 8 sts from shoulder edge.
Row 4: Dec 1 st from the neck edge. BO 8 sts from shoulder edge.
Row 5: Dec 1 st from the neck edge.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I think you’ve got it!

You can’t bind off at the end of the row, so I think this way would work better.

Thank you both, and that makes much more sense. :aww: :aww: :aww:

Next question!!! LOL…

Here’s what it says for the left side (Cam suggested trying both sides simultaneously, but for my first sweater, I think I’m going to do them one at a time):

Left side:
With WS facing, join yarn to shoulder edge. Work as for left side from * — 27 sts remain on holder for back neck.

Does that mean that I do the same exact thing as I did on the RS, except I do it for the WS (left shoulder)? Then I just leave those stitches on the holder until I get to the part for the neckband?

I was thinking she meant she was going to BO at the beginning of the rows… Which you have to do.

Yes, when you do the other side, you will do the BOs on the WS rows.

Thanks! I will try it! I hope I don’t screw it up! LOL. :aww: :aww: :aww:

If you do the BOs of 8 sts at the armhole edge (3x) you’re going to end up with ‘steps’ which you may not like or find difficult to join when seaming. Realizing this is your first sweater, you might consider doing slipped transitions so you’ll get a sloped edge OR short rows (perhaps you’ve done those on socks?).

How are you planning to join the shoulders? If you have live sts you can do a 3-ndl BO which is a strong, really clean shoulder seam. If not live, you’ll have to seam.

If you’re planning to seam, and want a sloped edge, work to w/in one st of the BO edge (for right armhole that’s the WS) and slip the last st. Turn. Slip the first 2 sts (the slipped one and the next one) onto the right ndl and work one BO. Work the remaining seven BOs.

ETA: Hereis image of the steps that you’ll have if you do standard BOs.

cam…I finished the back of the sweater and THEN saw your post! LOL…well…at least what you wrote assured me that it was supposed to look stepped! I’m pretty sure I did it correctly (I’m attaching 3 pictures for everyone’s review, lol). Hopefully, I won’t have too much trouble when it comes time to do all of the seaming. I have bookmarked the link you listed.

Thank you again to everyone! Now I have to knit the front of the sweater…yay!

Great, that looks just fine!

It looks great so far!!!

Oh, good! Thank you! :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:
