Sewing in pattern

Im having trouble understanding the sewing instructions…yes, SEWING, not knitting. See portion in CAPTIALS. And what are size four needles in mm? Found this pattern in the pattern section of this site.

PONYTAIL SCRUNCHIES, RUFFLED, AND SUPER-RUFFLED - (see note below)

(Great quick and easy to make for party favors, stocking stuffers, etc. make a wardrobe of colors for the children!)

Materials: Sportweight yarn, or baby yarn, about 45 yards for ruffled, and about 60 yards for super-ruffled. 1 PR. U.S. # 4 needles. Elastic ponytail circular bands, one for each scrunchie made.

Gauge: 6 sts and 8 rows = 1 inch.

Note: If using baby yarn, the gauge may be slightly different, but only gives a slight difference in finished product.

Directions: With color of yarn desired, cast on 125 sts for ruffled, or 160 sts for super-ruffled. Work in stockinette st until about 3”, to 3 ½” in length from beg, or as desired. Bind off.

SEW LENGHTWISE KNITTED PIECE ALL AROUND ENTIRE CIRCLE OF ELASTIC PONYTAIL BAND. SEW SIDE SEAM.

Note: In above photo, yellow scrunchie was made “super-ruffled”, and about 3 inches long . Pink scrunchie was made as ruffled, and about 3 ½ “ long. Make your own color combinations in stripes or colors as desired.

A US size 4 is a 3.5 mm.

By “sewing” they mean something like the mattress stitch to join the shorter ends and eventually longer sides of the rectangle you have knit to wrap it around and contain the ponytail holder.

I’ve made those before. If you use novelty yarn (like eyelash yarn), you don’t have to worry about how you stitch the seam closed. You can just wrap the yarn around and close the edges. It all blends together nicely.

Mattress works well for connecting any knitting, not just side seams.

HELP MY FELLOW KNITTERS, HELP !!!

Im doing stockinette stitch and is CURLING upwards on the v side!!

And i have to sew the pieces together!!

You’re not doing anything wrong. If you’re using regular worsted, sportweight, or baby yarn, stockinette stitch ALWAYS curls. When you finish all the stitching, and sew it together, it shouldn’t curl anymore.

What is a square knot? And how do you do one? Is there a replacement knot for a square knot, can i just use any old knot?

How do you start matteress stitch? I watched the video here and it doesnt show the begining. Do you begin just like regular sewing and start with a knot on the underside? Or leave it knot-less? :??

Not sure about the square knot part, but for doing the seaming…

When you finish knitting, you should keep enough yarn to use for seaming before you cut it. Then tie off the last stitch and start your seaming. Or, you could just tie on a piece of yarn and start seaming. That’s what I do, anyway. There may be a more “professional” answer from someone else. I’ve only been knitting for 3 years.

I tried to cheat. Plain and simple, i tried to cheat.

As we all know, knitting on circulars produces stockinette. So on a piece that didnt need to be done on circulars, I figured that if i just shifted the stitches to the left and kept going, it would work. I…I…wimped out. Would this have worked? Yes, no? :??

OH! and since these are my first circulars, i want to test them out. Would the scrunchie pattern (see above-first post) work on circulars?

Note: we need a knitting on circulars, and really confused smiley.
