Sewing garmetns together

I have heard that there are some new techniques to sewing sweaters together. My current pattern calls for using a “mattress stitch”. Does anyone know about these techniques?

I always use mattress stitch for sewing sweater parts together. It is virtually invisible and makes a beautiful finish. Here is a video that shows how to do it.
