Selvedge sts

so…these confuse me. Do I always slip them knit wise? purl wise? or do I slip them according to what my first stitch should be? so far when ever I go from slipping them knit wise to slipping them purl wise, I end up with like a knot on the side rather than the flatness I should have…
Help?

I think as long as you are consistent it doesn’t really matter, but most people slip purlwise unless the pattern tells you otherwise though. And knitting that last stitch will give you a nice straight edge.
