Selvedge Stitch?

I am starting a new project where I am knitting a sweater. The very first row says “p2 selvedge sts”. I have looked every where in the abbreviations help, etc. and no where do i see the term “selvedge”. What does it mean? Am I just a beginner or is this some thing new.

Please help. I cant start my project until I figure out what to do.

The selvedge sts are the ones at both edges of your knit item. Just purl them as instructed in the pattern.
