Selbu Sweater from Hobbii

I am on the sleeves and it is confusing, if anyone could help me, I would be greatly grateful

Hello
Is it this pattern?

It’s an eye catching design.

Can you tell us which part of the sleeve you are stuck on please? Quoting a row or two would be helpful (how many stitches you have and which size would help too).
I’m sure we’ll be able to help you past the tricky bit.

Yes, that is the pattern and I am confused on, I have changed needles & did 1 round of 48 sts. But then on page 6 of the pattern for siz 2xl its talking about casting off 16 sts, which doesn’t make sense.

So, I reread under the xs/s section and it stays to “evenly” increase 88 stitches. However there isn’t anyway to “evenly” increase 88 stitches.

So, do I add 40 more stitches to make 88 sts or do I add 88 sts on top of the existing 48 sts I have?

That took a while to read through the pattern, it’s not as clear as it might have been, is it?

Top of page 6 the first line is only for the xs and s sizes, to increase evenly 4 sts during the knit 1 round (you don’t do this for your size whch is as you have said).
The next sentence “on the next round you will increase 88 evenly”
“Now the fairisle patern of the sweater will start”
“Join pc and work following chart A until 44[must mean cm] or 17.3 inches”

So, you have done the zig zig pattern as per body instructions, changed needle size and worked 1 round.
Now, the way it reads is to increase evenly an additional 88 sts
48 + 88 = 136 sts
This would give a sleeve circumference of 68 cm or 27 inches. (Layed flat that’s 34 cm).
I understand your dilemma, how would you increase an additional 88 from 48?

So is it an error in the pattern and are you to increase TO 88 sts?
I believe you are correct and should be increasing 40 sts evenly to a total of 88.
88 sts would give a circumference of 44 cm or 17 inches. (Layed flat that’s 22 cm) which sounds more like the correct size for the sweater.

I would check that you are going to be happy with the finished size, and go with the increase of 40 sts, evenly, to a total of 88 sts.

Then you work the fair isle chart until 44 cm or the length you prefer.
Then bind of 8 sts before the underarm marker and 8 sts after the marker, making a total of 16 bound off for the underarm.

How does that sound?

I agree. One thing you might check is to measure the upper arm width of the sweater that you like and see how it compares to the width if you increase to 17inches. You can always increase or decrease at this point so that you have a sleeve that fits as you would like. It’s interesting that this sweater has all the increases after the zig-zag rather than gradual increases up the sleeve. Makes the pattern stitch easier to follow.

Thanks so much for your help. I have been asking everyone & getting mixed advice.
I’m going to try the 40 extra stitches. I’m just wondering with the 1 size all the way up the sleeve will cause any issue

I don’t know how to increase this patterned sleeve and make it still look like its supposed to.

This is a time consuming project that I have been slowly working on since May.

Thanks for your suggestion though, I do appreciate it.

No, I don’t think there will be any issue with it being a constant stitch count all the way up. Many sweaters are designed with a similar shape and its just down to personal taste (i have a shop bought cardigan with similar shape sleeve). It will puff out a bit after the detailed, closer fitting, cuff and definitely be easier to work the colour chart with a constant stitch count.
So long as you have checked the sleeve will fit it will be fine. But as salmonmac said, if you want wider or narrower you can change it now in this increase row.
If the sleeve isn’t going to fit with this stitch count and measurement let us know so we can offer help in modifying now before you move on.

I understand not wanting to extend the chart. It’s worth checking your gauge on the body however to make sure that the sleeve will fit well. This sweater is stunning and worth the extra time you’re putting in. I hope you let us see a photo when you finish!

This photo from the pattern shows the result of the increases above the cuff pretty clearly.

I agree with the others that the pattern must have left out the word “to”–increase to 88 stitches. Can you count across the chart and see if that makes sense for your size?

This is my chart that I am working from.

I will send pics once its completed, right now I just have the body and 1 cuff finished.

You are making quick progress with this!

I was thinking I was too slow
The pattern parts slow me down a bit but other than that just a plain sweater takes me roughly 2 weeks to knit.

I guess I need to learn how to do slow knitting.
