Seeded hat

My daughter wants me to make a seeded hat that I found on knitting pattern central site but it does not tell me what guage to use. It just says cast on 57 sts. It is the pink hat “seeded hat”. It does not give finished measurements or anything. I have not made a hat yet and it says to do it on straight needles but can’t I do it on round needles or dpn? And if I do it on dpn does that mean I k when it says P and P when it says K?
row1-K1,P1
continue for 10 rows
row 11 -K and all odd rows
row 12- P and all even rows
for 20 rows
Shape Crown(always repeat from * across row)
row 1-*K2tog, K2
row2 -*K2tog, P1
row3-*K
row4-*P
row5-*K2tog
row6-*P2tog
slip yarn needle through sts on the needlw then slide sts off needled and tighten.then turn inside out and with rs facing sew up with tail.

It looks like it’s made with a bulky yarn, which is why there are so few stitches to cast on. If you assume the hat is about 20" around, and there are 57 stitches, then you’re talking about a gauge of about 3 st per inch.

If you knit in the round, then you would reverse the stitches on the wrong side rows.

My daughter wants this yarn that has 10sts=4" on 8mm needle. How many sts should I put on and what needle? So when it says K1, P1 for 10 rows I should K1 P1 for the first row and then the 2nd P1 K1? Then K1 P1 for the 3rd and P1 K1 for the 4th etc? Shape crown row 1 K2tog, K2 and row 2 says K2tog, p1 so does that mean I would K2tog, K2 on the first shape row and then P2tog, K1 on the 2nd? How long should I make it before I start to shape the crown. there is 6 rows of shaping . Why do I always pick patterns that are not specific enough. I hope I did not comfuse you. I have not knitted a hat before.

If it has 57 stitches, an odd number, then you would start and end the first round with a knit stitch, so yes in order to get seed stitch you would have to do p1k1 on round 2, then k1p1 on round 3, etc.

Rather than tie yourself to a pattern that isn’t specific enough, you can create a hat specifically for your yarn, needles and headsize. This site has a basic formula for a ribbed-edge knitted hat. You can change the ribbing to seed stitch, if you like, but it just won’t be as stretchy as ribbing so you might want to take more off the head size than the 1-2 inches it calls for. It also gives guidelines for how many inches to knit before shaping.

For seed stitch in the round, on an even number of stitches, you’d k1,p1 on the first round, then p1, k1 on the next round. Repeat.

If you decide to go with this pattern, try the 57 and see how big it turns out to be. If you use the yarn you have, you could come very close with the pattern as written. To do it in the round, though, don’t do any purl stitches on the ‘head’ of the hat–just on the seed stitch edge.

Ingrid, what did you mean when you said not to do any purl sts on the “head”. There is no ribbing the whole hat is seeded and there is P throughout. And thanks a lot for the formula for the hat, that really helps. One more question, I always wondered what is the best way to tie the end it after you pull the sts through the remaining sts at the top of the hat and for the thumb on a mitt. After I draw up the sts I put the darning needle to the inside but I worry about it coming udone. Also, on my mitt pattern when I finish the hand I have to go back and k the thumb it says "Thumb: Slide sts from holder onto 2 needles. With 3rd needle, PU 2 sts from CO sts on palm. When I do this and K I always have a little hole beside the 2sts I pick up. It looks like I could PU 4 sts but then the thumb would be too big. After I try to weave the holes shut but I don’t do a good job. Is there a good way to close these holes without noticing them?

row 11 -K and all odd rows
row 12- P and all even rows
for 20 rows

These are the directions for the crown of the hat–stockinette stitch. You could do seed stitch all the way, but I don’t know if you would have to change the number of stitches–not as much stretch and probably tighter gauge.

As for the top–I pull the stitches through, twice if I can, and then stick the needle down through the little hole in the top and weave the end in the stitches around the hole. It doesn’t come out.

As for the mitten, what I did on my last one is to cast on an extra stitch on each end and then k2tog on the next round. It seemed to work. I haven’t done a lot of mittens lately, so I’m far from expert on those. Also try to pick up one row in from the edge for a more even transition. So pick up the 4 and then knit the end ones together.

thanks I will try those tricks.
