Seed stitch

I am knitting a throw and before and after each row, it says to K4SdSt which is “Knit 4 Seed Stitch.” So does this mean to K4 and then do one seed stitch? Or, does it mean to do 4 seed stitches? I’m confused.

Sharon

Welcome to KH. What pattern are you using? Is this the border on the sides? If so, how many border stitches do you have on each side? Since seed stitch is alternating knits and purls I think it should mean 4 sts in seed stitch, either kpkp or pkpk depending on what the last row was. You knit the purls and purl the knits for seed stitch. I may misunderstand how it works but I think it’s not really possible to knit one seed stitch, it’s a pattern formed by alternating knits and purls. Or maybe the purls are the seeds. This is a head scratcher for me now as I never thought about it before. I hope someone explains it.

That’s what I would do as well–kpkp or pkpk. I read it as “4 stitches in seed stitch pattern”.

I agree with the others, work 4 stitches in seed stitch pattern.

If it was to
k4, sdst1
Then the instructions would be separated out.
Also as gg said you can’t seed stitch a single stitch really.

Thank you all. I’m using the Summer Leaves Throw found on ravelry.com, but I’m using Encore worsted yarn. I’ve knitted the two stands of yarn using the seed stitch where you knit the pearls and pearl the knits, but when you get to R.1 it says K4SdSt, (P1, K10…) 6 times, K4SdSt. My problem not knowin how to do the K4SdSt. What does it mean?

Ok. It’s confusing. I’ll have to tink because I did 5 knits and one pearl. I don’t knit a lot but some of the patterns can be confusing.

Thank you,
Sharon

Sorry all. I get ahead of myself. I’m 66 and live in North Carolina. I just got my master’s degree in mental health counseling and have sent most everything to the board, but waiting on one reference letter. I want to counsel young children. I also have a certificate from Capella in play therapy.

I love to knit, but I’ve got a lot of “irons in the fire” so I have to find time to knit. At this time, I’m knitting two pieces a Summer Leaves Throw and and a Knit for Olive mohair sweater for my little granddaughter. The SLT is on ravelry.com and that is the one I’m talking about now.

To break it down, if the previous row was a seed stitch, then I would knit the pearls and pearl the knits. If my previous row was k,p,k,p then I would p,k,p,k. I would make 4 of these. Am I correct?

Congratulations on completing your degree! It’s very easy to get too many irons in the fire!

Did you start with four rows of seed stitch as the beginning border? You would just continue up the sides in that same pattern with the leaves between the sides. The designer offers her email address for questions (mailto:gottaknitit@gmail.com)

It means 4 stitches total
Either k p k p
Or p k p k
Not this combination done 4 times over.
The photo is super helpful showing the border

Yes. I found this in the pattern:
K4SdSt (Knit 4 Seed Stitch) at beginning and end of each row.
We guessed good. The weird way of writing it would throw anyone not accustomed to how things are typically done.

Hey, we got to have you join in here even if just for a short while. I’m so glad we could help. Good for you for your perseverance and sticking with a program to complete your degree. My granddaughter is working on her masters in the same field. She completed her four year at UW. She works for a school district currently I believe.

This is a beautiful pattern. Your afghan will be amazing.
