Seed Stitch to Double Knitting?

Hi all! First time posting, but I love this site, it’s helped me a lot through my <1 year of knitting. Let’s say I love a challenge.

Here’s the problem:
I’m in the middle of making a baby blanket/ Superman cape; I went with a garter border, and a seed stitch center field, and have to get the Superman logo in the middle. I was just going to switch to stockinette and intarsia, but then I stumbled on double knitting and wanted to know if it was possible to introduce double knitting in the middle of the work for just the logo?

Looking forward to hearing back!

P.S. I’ve been knitting with two strands the whole time for thickness, I don’t know if that helps at all

Interesting question. My guess was that you could, but I tried it to be sure. It works. I don’t know if you have in mind working the double knit all the way from side to side for this section or have regular St st on each side of it and then have double knit in the very middle. Either way I think it will work. When you get to where you want to begin double knitting increase one stitch for each stitch you want to double knit. I used a backwards loop cast on. I threw all the new stitches on with one color and then on the next row started doing 2 colors one on one side and one on the other.

I haven’t tried this but Merigold, what if the poster uses the doubled yarn she is already knitting with instead of increasing? What do you think of using one strand of the yarn for the front st and the other for the back all along the sts in the area of double knitting?

I think that would work too. There is always more than one to do something it seems. I don’t know if she wants to keep both sides of the double knitting the same color or not, but she certainly could.

Thanks for the responses, as it turns out, I do want the same color on both sides; what my friend requested is a red field, with the Superman logo framed in black, the ‘S’ and the diamond in red, and the space between the S and the frame in yellow.

So now my next question is how do I introduce the yellow color in there to use for double knitting as well? I’m not quite sure how I’d cast that bit on…

Do you belong to Ravelry? There is a group on there about double knitting. You may find some help there. I’ve never done DK with more than 2 colors on the whole project. It may be pretty easy to do as long as you only have 2 colors in one row of knitting. If it involves more I believe it is a lot more complex. I really can’t help you, maybe someone else here knows more about it than I do.

I don’t know how to introduce the yellow into the double knitting. I’ve only see 2-color double knitting. You’re also going to have to make a second chart for the reverse side so that the logo is not a mirror image and the letter “S” comes out correctlly oriented.
Straight intarsia colorwork on a stockinette background is going to be much more straightforward. Introducing multiple colors will be easy and you can always line the blanket/cape or even knit a backing for the logo area.
However you choose to go, please post a photo. This sounds like an exciting project!

Merigold: thanks, I’m signing up now to see if I can get more answers

salmon: I will definitely post the project here, I’m really excited for the outcome! Your idea is pretty good, if I were to do straight intarsia then create a logo patch… hmmm… I’m off to explore attachment options!
