Sedona Sunset Wrap

I am working a sedona sunset wrap. I have finished the increasing section. I have 38 stitches on the needle. The next section reads as follows.

First Sts once, Repeat sts 1-2 17 times, Last sts once.
Cont pattern as established through Row 12 of small lace increasing chart.

My question is how to I proceed. The ledgend shows no stich at the begining of Row 1 and no stitch at the end. I am completely clueless as to what to do next.

Please Help
I have attachedknit pattern (2) the chart.

How many sts do you have on the needle before you work this row?
It looks like you work K2, M1R then work the repeat sts (boxed sts 1 and 2) 17 times then finish the row with M1L, k2. That would be 38sts to start the row, 40sts when you end the row.

Thank you so much! They way you explained it makes so much more sense than the way the pattern was written. There are 38 stiches on the needle at the beginning of the row. The no stiches in the pattern chart were throwing me off.

The “no stitch” boxes or greyed out boxes give almost everyone fits a first. As you can see from the chart, those boxes are holding a place for the increases that will come in later rows.
Enjoy working this shawl. It’s going to be a beauty.

Thank you
