Having another issue

I circled the part I don’t understand. The 2nd sentence says work on this set of 6 [6:8:8::10] sts. only for first side of neck I don’t understand this or the next part. I’m doing the first 8 in the brackets.

You’re going to be working one side of the front neck at a time. Knit the 8sts and turn as you would at the end of a row. You can place the other sts for the front on a holder or waste yarn. You’ll get back to them later.
Anytime there is a 0 (or an x or -) for your size, skip completely over that direction. When you turn you’ll be on a purl row. If you call this next row, row 1 then decrease at the neck edge on rows 1,2,3 and 4. At the same time, dec at the armhole or raglan edge on rows 2 and 4. That’ll leave you with 2sts. Work one row then k2tog, cut the yarn leaving about a 6" tail and pull the strand through the last remaining stitch.
