Sea Lettuce scarf - I need help too please!

Warning: I’m more of a crocheter than a knitter, so I’m still learning some knitting techniques. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I’m trying Lucy Neatby’s Sea Lettuce scarf pattern, but I’m confused. I started the short row wedges with the knitted cast-on & have completed them 4 times per the instructions. Now it’s saying to knit 10 more sts across the cast-on edge…but how? There are no live stitches there, so am I supposed to pick them up somehow? Should I have used the provisional crochet cast-on instead (if yes, then why is the knitted-cast on included in the instructions?)?

I just noticed that the beginning of SCARF ONE says to knit 2 rows with Main yarn. So, I should have knitted 2 rows, THEN started the short row wedges?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

If you check out the videos in the Tips section and scroll down, you’ll see a video on how to pick up stitches along an edge. You don’t need live stitches, you create new ones.

You can pick up sts in either a knit or crocheted cast on. To add the 10 sts though, I think you cast them on. This thread on the same pattern may help you.

Thank you for your help. I figured it out - you have to do the provisional cast-on which will give you the 10 live stitches in order to continue. The knitted cast-on instructions are for making the picots. I wish the pattern was clearer about these.

The modified conventional BO for the picots is confusing & difficult at first, and it twists one direction. The traditional BO I’m used to makes the picots twist the other direction. I’m assuming I have to adjust my tension somewhere, I think, I will have to continue playing around with them.

Thank you for all your help!
