Scarf suggestion

I’m pretty new at knitting and would like to try my hand at making a scarf.

Does anyone have any suggestions (as well as a pattern) for a good first timer scarf??

Also, what kind of yarn would you recommend? I’m not a fan of scratchy wool.

The Scrunchable Scarf is a nice one to make–just k2, p1 all the way across on both sides. Several people have made them with various yarns. Do a search for Scrunchable Scarf and you should be able to find some pictures. They’re much nicer than the picture with the pattern.

www.knittingpatterncentral.com has about a kazillion scarves there, too, if you feel like looking.

I once lived in Suncook, NH. Ever hear of it?

If you are just starting out don’t spend a lot of $ on yarn in case it doesn’t turn out quite right. my first scarf was made with Lion Brand Homespun. It’s not too expensive and feels nice. Lion Brand woolease is good too. It’s easier to deal with than homespun and is nice and soft. It is also very inexpensive. As for a pattern, garter stitch only is a nice easy thing to start on on. You don’t even need a pattern. Just cast on till it’s wide enough and keep going till you have it long enough…have fun!

I forgot about your yarn question. There are so many yarns out there, and Hedgewick is right–you don’t want to spend a fortune while learning. Personally, I would avoid Homespun. Find a yarn that you like the color and feel of–nothing to fizzy or feathery, just a basic yarn, so you can easily see the stitches.

For yarn, I would recommend not using black or anything too dark to start with. It’s difficult to see the stitches with very dark yarn. Other than that, just have fun with it!

I agree with the scrunchable scarf. Also, I really liked working with the Plymouth Encore yarn when I did a hat for my BIL. It was nice and easy to work with and they have a lot of great colors.

Yes! Encore is a great starter yarn - it comes in so many yummy colors. Either the Scrunchable Scarf or a simple garter stitch scarf can be fancied up a little with stripes - I like to alternate two or three colors in big blocks.

Thanks for your input. I just looked and my LYS carries the Encore yarn. I’ve been wanting an excuse to check them out and now I have one. Plus I love their name - “Ewe’ll Love It!”. So cute!

The scrunchable scarf looks really easy! I can definitely do that.

Ingrid - I have heard of Suncook but I’ve never been there. I live in Nashua.
