Scarf size to afghan?

I am really enjoying the Meandering Scarf pattern, and would like to use a chunky to make an afghan, can anyone out there figure out how many to cast on and what do you think of this idea. here is the meadering scarf pattern…

It looks like the original pattern is a multiple of 6, 5 times, with 2 sts on both ends. So if you increase in increments of 6 times an odd number - 46, 58, 70, etc to the number of sts you need (multiply your gauge times the width you want) it should work out.

Math is not my strong part of the brain,lol…
