i just finished an irish hiking scarf in a shocking orange color for a friend of mine. i used lamb’s pride bulky yarn (100% wool)…do i need to block it before i send it off to her? and if so, what is the best way to do it?
I would dunk it in lukewarm water with a bit of wool wash if you have it, roll it up in towels and squeeze the water out, then lay it out to dry. I don’t think you need to pin it–just keep checking it to make sure it’s even. It should prevent it from rolling up on itself as she wears it.
I always say that blocking is about personal preference. Do you like how it looks as is?? Are the cables well defined? If so, then blocking isn’t necessary. If you find that the stitches are uneven or the cables don’t “pop” as much as you’d like, then try blocking. I’d pin the scarf down, stretching it however you want it, then spray the whole thing with water and let it dry. Or, you could saturate the whole thing with water and roll it out in a towel to get out most of the water, then pin it to the dimensions that you want and let it dry. The risk with the second method is that it could stretch out a LOT if completely wetted.
Here is an article about blocking that might help.
