I am knitting this great scarf. It is really coming out great except for the edges. If you notice the pattern, a lot of the rows start with a purl stitch and I think that is makes the edges look really yucky (for lack of a better word). In hindsight, I wish I would have just added an extra knit stitch or something to the beginning of each row. I have over a foot knitted so far but wouldn’t be opposed to making a change to try and make it better.
Any suggestions?
The edge would have looked more even if you had added an extra stitch to each edge–slip the first, knit the last. At this point, though, if you change to anything different, it will be obvious. However, if you really can’t live with it the way it is (the rest of it is gorgeous, by the way) you can frog and start over with those extra stitches added.
I don’t see that it’s yucky at all. If you’re thinking your edge stitch is too loose, you can give an extra pull when you do the first stitch of each row and that takes up both the first stitch and the last one in the row below. It’s supposed to be a little wavy, and probably once you block it, the edges will even out.

I tried this from the “Stitch ‘n’ Bitch” book and it has helped me with this problem: Just as you insert the needle into the second stitch of each row, give the yarn a tight pull just before going on, then continue with the rest of the row. My edges have never been so straight!
