Hey there!
I’m very new to knitting, and I am attempting my first scarf. I know that stockingette (sp?) stiches cause the edges to curl, and I read somewhere that a way to avoid that is to put a border on it. What i’m doing right now is a 4 stitch wide garter border, and about 25 stockingette stitches in the middle. Its going great, however the border is just flapping over the middle part. (hope that makes sense). Is there any way that I can correct that, or do I just have to live with it?
Also, how do I knit with more than one colour? Blocks of different colours, not different colours within rows or anything…I’ll be asking that in about 6 months!
There’s not much you can do about it now. When the scarf is done, you can try blocking it. If it’s natural fiber, wet it and lay it flat and it should dry that way. If it’s acrylic, the blocking won’t be as sure, but you can try covering it with damp towels and let it dry underneath.
As for knitting with stripes of different color, just change color and knit with it. You can weave in the end of the old color later. If it’s just for a few rows (always an even number so your yarn will change on the same side) you can bring the yarn not in use up the side by putting your working yarn under the yarn not in use as you work your way up. If you’re making the stripe large, you’re better off cutting it, and weaving in the end later.
thanks for your reply!
I will try blocking it, but it is acrylic so it might not work…darn.
Its not horrible…most scarves look kinda rolled anyways, I can live with it, but I WAS going to give it as a gift, and want to give a flat scarf. Does anyone know any simple patterns (knit/purl only) that produce a flat scarf?
Thanks again,
Melissa
If you’re feeling confident enough, you could knit your scarf circularly. You only have to use the knit stitch, it’s double-thick, and it’s double-sided. (No wrong side) Knitting circularly is really much easier than you might think, and of course Amy has videos to help!
All you’d have to do to finish off is close up the ends. You could even leave one end open and it would be like a hat/scarf combo in the style of Elizabeth Zimmerman. (If you don’t know who she is, you must go to your local library and check out whatever they have that she wrote. She will become a close friend, I guarantee it.)
It occurs to me that if Amy could make videos about life that are as helpful as her knitting videos, she’d be worshipped as a goddess. :rofling:
