Scarf and needle questions

So, I’m currently knitting something … I really don’t know what it is but I was hoping for a scarf. It seems too wide to be one, it has 50+ loops on the needles. ;o; My needles are Boye 11 8MM by the way.

Questions:

  1. How many “loops” do you think I should have for the width of a scarf? I’m not wanting a small one, but not a blanket on the shoulders.
  2. What do you think would be the ideal size of the needles to make a scarf?
  3. I’m looking to buy a pack of knitting needles. What do you think would be the best?

It really depends on the weight of the yarn. You’d have a lot more stitches with fingering weight than for bulky yarn. What size needles are you using? Not quite sure what you mean by what you wrote.

I’m very new to knitting, this will be the second thing I made. .-.

I just looked at the bottom of my needles and it said that.
Here’s what it looks like.

The type of yarn I have is the generic yarn that I see everywhere, with the heart on it? .-.

Red Heart yarn? Maybe, Red Heart Super Saver? That’s a worsted weight. The only way to know how many to cast on for the width you want is to knit a swatch and then figure out how many stitches per inch you get. What are you planning to do, maybe garter stitch which is knit every stitch in every row.

What was the first thing you made? If you used the same kind of yarn and the same needles, it would give you a good idea of your gauge (stitches per inch).
