Santa Stocking

I’m trying to knit a santa stocking and I have come to the foot and it says -->With RS facing, k across first 3 heel sts from holder, pick up and kit 4 sts along side of heel knit center 14 sts from holder;pick up and knit 4sts along side of second half of heel k remianing 3 sts from holder - 28sts.

I really don’t understand what pick up and knit 4 sts along side means. Can anyone help me understand? :rollseyes:
