I am SOOOO frustrated! I decided to put aside my other projects for the day and look up arm warmer patterns. (My father is in a nursing home, and is always complaining about his arms being cold…I figured, “Hey! I can cure that!” I found SEVERAL beautiful patterns…and finally found a beginners pattern…since I’ve never made them before, I figured the easier, the better. Whew, I’m glad I did…since I managed to ROYALLY _____ (insert naughty word here) them up. I figured I’d knit a pair for myself just to see how the pattern worked. Everything started out just fine…until I got to the thumb. It was a super simple pattern where you just make a hole for the thumb…and I managed to muck it up good and PROPER. It said to knit until you get to the point where you wanted the thumbhole…then bind off whatever number of sts you wanted for the hole…and continue knitting the rest of that row. When you start the next row, cast on the number of sts needed to bring your stitch count back up to the original number. Easy, right?? Ok, so I decided to bind off 4 sts…I did just that, and then finished the row. I didn’t know how to cast on in the middle of the row, so I looked that up real quick and did it. I don’t know what the method was called, just that I did it w/my thumb. I cast on my 4 sts and knitted away. A couple of rows later, I realized that I had my nice little thumb hole AND another hole right under my cast on point. ARGH!!! I LOATHE having to rip my knitting apart and start over! I was almost finished!!! How irritating!!!:hair:
Someone PLEASE figure out what my stupid butt did and let me know!!! Thanx!
Is it possible that when you cast on the four stitches you did it backwards? I did a baby bib once that required binding off and casting on in the middle of the row, and I kept doing it so that the yarn stretch across the gap instead of the stitches “working” across like they were supposed to.
It’s been a while, so I couldn’t begin to walk you through it, but I seem to remember having to turn the work around while I did the cast on, and then turn it back to work it.
I’m sure if that’s the problem someone else will be able to help you sort it out…I’m still pretty new at all this myself.
Sorry about having to rip out…but I’ve found that that’s when I learn the most.
You know what?? I think you’re right…I don’t remember turning my work…ARGH, having to start ALL over for something SO stupid! I’m just glad it was a small project! Thank you!
I don’t think that was “so stupid”.
I’ll tell you what’s stupid: Sometimes at the end of long tail cast on, I have a long tail left. A couple of times it has been so long that I mistook it for the working yarn and started knitting with it, not noticing until it ran out. Now THAT’S STUPID.
There was one project (still not completed) where I a) cast on using the long-tail method but backwards (knitting with the tail instead of the working yarn); and b) cast on properly, did a couple of rows, picked it up the next day, and ran out of yarn halfway down the row because I was again knitting using the tail. Despite the fact that I was several rows in. …I’m calling this the Doomed Project. heh.
(There was another project where I got up to go make tea, came back, and was a stitch short – I had 31 stitches split over two needles (15+16), had just done the 15 needle before the tea break, but only had 15 on the needle I did after the tea break. I spent about five minutes trying to figure out where I’d dropped the stitch, since it wasn’t anywhere I could find it easily, before I realized that I had flipped it around and knit back across the wrong needle.)
I cannot TELL you how many times I’ve done that!!! Here’s another one 4 you…I only do this when I’m knitting on double points in the round…in fact, I just did it this afternoon. I’ll put my knitting down for a minute or two…to take a drink, change the channel…whatever, when I pick it up, it’s ALWAYS upside down and I can’t FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out where I’m supposed to knit from next! Yeaaa…this little “Duhhhh” moment usually takes about 5-10 minutes for me to sort out. I seriously need to pick up my double points more often…maybe then, I wouldn’t get so EASILY confused!!!
