Row requiring more stitches than the CN

I am new to knitting and have tried to get this pattern going many times but am lost. I have 30 CN stitches but Row 1 has instructions for 34 stitches. how to I do the last four stitches in row 1.

Cast on 30 sts.

Row1:(RS): Sl1, k3, k2tog, yo, k3, p2, k2tog, yo, p2, k3, k2tog, yo, k3, p2, k2tog, yo, p1, k2

Row 2: Sl1, work sts as they appear (knit the knit sts, purl the purl sts, and purl all yo’s).

That’s right row one uses 30 stitches. Remember that yarn overs do not use a stitch. You just wrap the yarn over the needle then take it to the back again.

Welcome to KH. In case you want/need a video, here are some to choose from.

Is CN a typo and should be CO? That’s what I’m assuming.

The yarnovers (yo) are the extra four stitches. You’re adding them in on that first row by using that particular method of increasing. So row 1 has 30 stitches worked into the cast-on stitches and four yos done on their own to increase the total.
