Robe Cable

Hello there, I am beginning a new dog sweater and want to do a different collar. The book calls it a robe cable but I didn’t find any videos on that pattern. Here is what is says. Row 1 sl 1, k2 “p4, k4” repeat across work to last 7 sts, end p4, k3. Row 2 Sl 1, p2, k2tog, leave on left-hand needle, k in first st move both sts to right hand needle, ktbl of 2nd st on left hand needle, k in first st on left hand needle, move both sts to right hand needle, p4" repeat to last 3 sts, p2, k1

What I don’t understand is on row 2 where it says to k2tog and leave on left needle. Do you knit the two stitches together to become one and then put it back on left needle? If so what is the first st that you k and move both back over, is it the one on the needle or one of the two stitches knitted together?

I can’t give you much technical advice; I’m a new knitter and had my first class on cables last Saturday!

But the term is “rope cables” or “rope cable pattern.” Try looking for videos or instructions using these terms.

k2tog, leave on left-hand needle, k in first st move both sts to right hand needle, ktbl of 2nd st on left hand needle, k in first st on left hand needle, move both sts to right hand needle,

These are the instructions for the twists that make up the cable. Do a search for Right Twist and Left Twist, or just follow the instructions step by step. It might help if you do it on a sample - CO about 10 sts with larger needles, work a few rows in the basic pattern then do the R twist (k2tog etc) then the L twist (knit the 2nd st before the first st).

I did spell it wrong sorry, it is rope cable. I tried to find a video by putting in twisted left or right and I couldn’t find anything except the basic cable. I actually did make a sample and that is not helping me. I guess I will go study it and see if it comes to me.

I can’t figure it out. If someone could just tell me about how the k2tog and leave on left needle works that may help me.

I think what it means is to put your needle through 2 stitches as if to knit, make the stitch which will then be on the right needle but don’t push the stitches off as you usually do. You then knit the 1st stitch you didn’t push off the needle, again without pushing it off the end of the needle, then slip the 2 stitches onto the right needle. Clear as mud?

I have to go get yarn and needles and try this myself.

PS: I tried it and I think what I wrote works.

Do what it says - k2tog but leave them on the needle. Then knit only into the first st and that completes the stitch.

You want to search for Right Twist and Left twist, not twisted right and left.

Here’s a video for k2tog and leave it on the right needle etc. (right twist).
You can do the same thing with a cable needle: one st to a cable needle, hold in back, knit 1, knit 1 from the cable needle. You can substitute for the left twist by holding the single st on the cable needle to the front.
The twists are worth learning if possible because you won’t have to fiddle with a cable needle.

Thanks so much, you have helped me tremendously!
