I’d like to knit this ‘quick knit cap’ calls for 1 skein worsted weight yarn size 8 needle- 4 1/2 sts per inch - cast on 72sts
question is can any yarn be used as long as you get the proper gauge? I am trying size 9 needles and am getting the gauge
I picked up Vanna’s choice (Lion Brand)100% acrylic/100%acrylique/100% acrilico 3.5oz/100g 170 yds
would this work?

Yes, that should be fine to use.
You are right, the gauge is what is important not the exact size needles recommended or even the exact yarn. Needle size is always only a suggestion, and usually based on what the knitter of the item used, and it may or may not have anything to do with the size needles YOU will need to do the same thing.
