From what i know in sewing, the wrong side is the side that looks worse. But, alas,we are knitting and the rules need knot (ha! get it?) apply. What is the wrong side? Do we choose the wrong side? Or is it specified? How can we tell right from wrong?
Right Side, Wrong Side
Well technically any side you WANT to show is the right side, but… when you are doing stockinette (knit a row/purl a row) then the side with the V’s or flat side is considered the right side. The bumpiest side of garter is considered the front.
Usually it’s pretty obvious which is the right side. Any pattern stitches are designed to show on the right side. As Jan said, stockinette stitch has the smooth v’s for the right side; reverse stockinette would have the bumps for the right side.
If for some reason you really cant tell the right side by the pattern - let your cast on tail be your guide.
I have had this problem with a fuzzy yarn I am using - the purls and knit stitches just are not obvious. If I put down my needles before I am at the end of the row I cant always tell where I am in the pattern. So I use the tail to remind me. I knit left so my cast on tail hangs to the left when I am on the right side. And its on my right when I am on the reverse side.
That makes it easy for me to get back into the pattern. (k, p, all odd rows, purl all even)
